Portrait of artist Kakan Hermansson, photo by Emma Grann

Kakan Hermansson (b. 1981, Lund, Sweden) is an artist based in Stockholm. Working primarily with ceramics, alongside textiles, film and installation, she explores questions of power, class, sexuality and violence through a feminist perspective. Her practice connects personal narratives with political structures, examining whose experiences are recognised and how hierarchies of taste and value take shape within art and society.

Hermansson holds an MFA in Ceramics and Glass from Konstfack (2012). Her work has been exhibited at Gustavsbergs Konsthall, Borås Konstmuseum, Eskilstuna Konstmuseum and Sandgrund Lars Lerin, among others. She is a founding member of the artist collective Den Nya Kvinnogruppen.

Her art is rooted in an analysis of power, encompassing class, sexuality, violence, and aesthetic values. Craft holds a central place in her work, serving as a recurring reference to tradition and meaning, while she consistently looks toward the home and everything it entails. Hermansson works with ceramics, glass, and textiles.

“When I started at Konstfack, I considered art to be bourgeois, and in many respects I still do. Using art merely for decoration is uninteresting, art must pose questions, provoke, and be disruptive. When the world is perfect, then we can have art for the sake of adornment, but until then, it must be something more.”

Kakan Hermansson, excerpt from the radio program “Sommar 2014”, translated into English
