Thyra Weiss (b. 1998, Stockholm, Sweden) lives and works in Stockholm.

Moving between painting and textile art, Weiss explores the relationship between material, memory and human experience. With painting as her foundation and weaving as her primary medium, her practice moves between figuration and abstraction, examining how personal experiences can be transformed and given physical form. Themes of grief, melancholy, everyday life and the passage of time recur throughout her work.

Working with raw and repurposed materials, Weiss develops her work through an ongoing dialogue between artistic intention and material. Her ideas take shape through a process in which the physical qualities of the materials contribute to their expression. Recurring in her work are faceless figures whose bodies communicate what faces cannot, reflecting an interest in the relationship between what is visible and what remains beneath the surface.

Through variations in texture, density and transparency, motifs emerge as shadows, shifting with the surrounding light. Drawing on the transparency techniques pioneered by Frida Hansen, Weiss explores the interplay between presence and absence, allowing the material itself to become an integral part of the image.

At the centre of her practice is an interest in giving form to experiences that resist straightforward representation. Through the physical act of making, thoughts and emotions are translated into tangible forms, allowing personal narratives to exist beyond their original context while remaining open to interpretation.

Thyra Weiss (b. 1998) lives and works in Stockholm. She is currently completing a BA in Textile Art at Konstfack, graduating in 2026, and recently spent a semester on exchange at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).
